As I've mentioned a few times, Ashlynn has really gotten into playing with play dough. It's not a completely self sufficient activity as she usually likes me around to roll the dough into a ball shapes or make things like hats (I mistakenly made a Frosty the Snowman during the holidays, and still am requested to make him every time). But she's usually entertained for a solid 15 minutes which buys me a nursing session or dinner clean up with her happily, and quietly, occupied.
I found lots of DIY recipes on pinterest and after the first one falling through, this was a solid winner. We made our first batch in December and are still making our way through it. I usually rip off a baseball sized portion and let Ashlynn play with that. If it falls on the floor too much or picks up crumbs leftover from dinner, I toss it. We still have plenty left and even better, it's still not dried out! It's made with natural ingredients, however skip the Kool Aid if you are looking to avoid food coloring. I didn't mind using it, since the dough is so salty I knew Ashlynn wouldn't be tempted to eat it and it makes it smell nice. I think she tried it once and I've never seen it near her mouth again. Either way, it'd be totally safe if she did!
Ingredients
2C Flour
1/2 C Salt
3 tsp cream of tarter
1 packet of Kool Aid
2 Tbsp oil
2 C Water
Directions
Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar, and Kool Aid in a bowl.
(I like to measure the items using small measuring cups and spoons, so Ashlynn has more chances at dumping them in!)
Add water and oil and whisk until clumps have dissolved. Pour into medium saucepan over medium heat.
Using a spatlula, stir around edges and bottom as dough forms and begins to pull away from sides. Keep at it until all liquid has turned to dough. Let cool.
Remove from pan and knead until smooth. Give husband death glare for groaning over photographer duties, even though you told him you were through! Store in air tight container.
Break out some soft edged cookie cutters, kitchen utensils (plastic knives, garlic press, potato masher, rolling pin, etc), wooden letter blocks or plastic shapes, and even small toys or action figures to join in the fun! Get creative and enjoy!
Love this, we also love homemade play dough our way!!! You look like you are ROCKING IT as a mom of two! :)

We always use the 1/4 cup measuring spoon so that Annabelle can dump and dump and dump! We used a similar recipe that was smaller but I'm so glad we tried it, she is still asking to play! Her favorite is cutting the pieces with a (kids) knife. Thanks for the suggestion!!
ReplyDeleteWe're totally making some this week! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteawesome! can't wait to see how sadie likes it!
ReplyDeleteHaha, men! Such a difficult task to actually get myself in a photo!
ReplyDeleteI would love a smaller recipe, but once I found this stays soft for so long, I don't mind having a bunch left over
ReplyDeleteGotta love babywearing, best way to keep both girls happy!
ReplyDeleteI'm totally diggin the kool-aid instead of the jello! Totally trying this recipe!!
ReplyDeleteI think I am going to try this out.I never through to make my own. I just figured I would buy Elin play dough form the store.
ReplyDeleteSo excited to try this! Mason LOVES to put EVERYTHING in his mouth so I am so glad that this is natural in case he slips some by me and accidentally eats some. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely a fun activity to do with a toddler, no messy raw eggs. Ashlynn loves helping in the kitchen so this is the perfect recipe for that and she gets to play with it after!
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely super salty! Hopefully he gets turned off and learns its for play only, but still safe if he did sneak a piece... kids eat worse things!
ReplyDeletesmells like punch! my kind of play dough ;)
ReplyDeleteSo glad there is natural play dough. Noah did try eating this kind at an art class. Not sure if it deterred him for the future! I'll have to try it at home!
ReplyDeleteWe (I) love making our own playdough! There are so many fun ways to make it "your own" and it makes a ton. And check you out, wearing your baby and making playdough with your toddler! Super Mom!
ReplyDeleteOh this is awesome! Can't wait to make it with Ellie!! And little Kenley has the halo that Ellie got around that age!!
ReplyDeleteNever heard it called a halo before! Ashlynn had it too! I'm wondering of Ks hair is also going to lighten up like Ashlynn's did
ReplyDeleteWould've never thought to use kook-aid for color, how clever!
ReplyDeleteOh, I've been looking for a good homemade playdough recipe. Thanks for posting! Purple's Mac's favorite color, so we'll probably make the same! :)
ReplyDeletePurple is Ashlynn's favorite too, although I think it just might be her favorite to say "purp -ple"
