T'was Early November and all through the house...

Mommy was planning how to go all out for Christmas!

Typically I'm a strict no decorating until Black Friday type, it was our tradition growing up and being that Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday (fooooddddd), I like to give it the respect it deserves.

However, with labor impending and a new arrival most likely keeping me busy through early December - and all of next year, I have a little anxiety of how and when it'll all get done.  Especially since this is our first Christmas in our new home, I'm determined to make it special.  So I've been making a list and checking it twice.

Earlier this week we checked out some Christmas trees (of the faux variety... yeah, I'm one of those).  And between my errands at Lowe's, Target, and Michael's, the holiday displays have both Ashlynn and I dreaming of sugarplums dancing in our heads.

In addition to trimming the perfect tree and finding a new home (a mantle!) for my angel collection, I'm most excited about starting some holiday traditions with Ashlynn and Kenley.   One tradition I had growing up with decorating oversized gingerbread men cookies while waiting for Santa to come by on the Fire Truck, and being that I still have the those cookie cutters, we'll be getting into the squeezy gel icing and red hots action too!

I've also added back visiting Santa, watching Christmas movies while drinking cocoa with too many marshmallows, and heading over to Longwood Gardens holiday exhibit, just like last year.

A new tradition to add is a spin on the classic Advent calendar.  Growing up, my brother and I always got to pick a new calendar at Hallmark and we loved opening the doors each day and seeing what facts, pictures, or sometimes candy was hidden behind them.  For Ashlynn and Kenley, I'd like to do something new (well, something I saw on pinterest ages ago, probably before children).  I'd like to wrap up 25 Christmas themed books and keep them near the tree or at the fireplace, and each night, allow the girls to pick one book to unwrap and read before bed.  They won't be new books each year, but the same Christmas books that we get to break out for the season (of course adding age appropriate ones as they grow).  Hopefully, this creates a fun holiday bedtime routine and keeps encouraging their love of reading year after year.

While I have already started the collection, one of the books I'm most excited to add is giving Ashlynn a personalized version of the "Night Before Christmas".

I love that we can customize the book with Ashlynn’s name, birthday, hometown, pets and sister, Kenley. We get to include a special dedication, upload a photo, and even include her on Santa’s “Naughty or Nice” list.

I can't wait to get Ashlynn excited about Santa's arrival and have this book in our collection.  Being a timeless classic, I know it'll be one of her favorites, but even more so when she gets to see her own name and family in the story!

A big thanks to MyChronicleBooks for sponsoring this post and offering 30% to all readers who would like to purchase their own personalized book for their child or as a gift this Christmas!

    1. I agree, I'd love to my Mrs. Claus and have like a new activity planned for the 25 days of Christmas, but sadly, I am not... nor am I *that* holiday crazy (but I know plenty of people who are!) I just hope each year we can slowly add new things that make each year better than last while keeping what we thought was fun or trying something new if something we did previously wasn't all that great.

I know it'll just get more fun as the girls get older and more into it!

  7. I still get goosebumps when the fire truck rolls down our street and I still reach my hand out for a candy cane from Santa.
The book idea is so clever...I'm borrowing that idea & instilling that tradition this year.

  10. Oh this made me even more anxious to put Christmas decor up! Maybe if I wait until next weekend Brad won't think I'm SO crazy. I love that you're having a baby in a matter of days/weeks and you're going all over town to buy Christmas decor. One day Ashlynn will thank you for doing this for her! :)
