[Shortcakes] 18 Months

Ashlynn turned 18 months on Friday.  Um, that's a year and half you guys!  I can't believe how fast time is flying and even looking back 6 months ago how much has changed.  She's a true toddler and just a sponge!  We celebrated by going to our mommy group end of year party at a local farm that sells pumpkins (I wouldn't call it a pumpkin patch), but there was pumpkin painting, hay rides, a hay maze and most loved of all, ginger snaps!

Says:
List is still growing at an exponential pace.  She's really getting great at repeating words back when asked.  Not always perfectly, but we are just looking to expand the vocabulary and her recognition.  For example, she knows that a cow says Moo, but she rarely says cow.  If I point to the picture she'll Moo, so now I say this is a Cow, can you say Cow?  "Cow", What does the cow say? "Moo".  And then I work on asking who the cow is the next time we read it to see if she remembers the word.   Works sometimes, others we just keep at it.  I know she knows the word (since I can ask without a picture and still get the correct response), it's just getting her to reach into her brain and use it :)

We've also been working a lot of colors, shapes, ABCs, and numbers.   Nothing crazy, just trying to make every day play somewhat enriched.  While we'e been working on Kenley's nursery, I was keeping Ashlynn busy with a tub of bath letters and numbers.  I would ask her to pick up all the blue ones or green ones, or find the green "A".  I wouldn't say she's doing any of it at stellar performance, but I'm just hoping it's sinking in somewhere.

In terms of her own development, she is starting to say more two syllable words or trying to finish a word as opposed to "Bah" for "Ball".  She's saying "Daddy" or "Dada" instead of  just "Da" and I'm officially "Mama" instead of "mmmam".

Stats:
We go on Wednesday for her 18 Month check up and will find out her height and weight.  As for teeth, she cut her bottom right molar two weeks ago and it already seems to have come up faster than her top molars that cut back in August.  She's also cutting the top right lateral incisor.  So we are up to almost 5 teeth up top and 5 on the bottom.

Loves:
The her bunny and blank (and binky too, but still trying to keep that to a crib only habit).  She grew attached to her bunny and blankie around a year, but they are becoming the must go everywhere items.  Luckily we make it out of the house without blankie, but Bun Bun is pretty much with us at all times - usually me holding as she frequently hands them off to me for safe guarding while she plays.  Next point, independent play.  She's really starting to take more time playing by herself, she still likes me to stay close by, but it's nice I can sit in the playroom chair and sort through emails or blogs and she can entertain herself for a bit.  It's also nice when I'm trying to prep dinner.  Kenley.  Or "Kah".  She knows where her room is and where she is (my belly, obv).  She'll rest her hands on my stomach and feel for kicks with more patience than her daddy.  Animals.  Nothing new, but we had our first Petting Zoo experience this month and she loved it.  I loved the generous amount of hand sanitizer after.  Climbing.  She's getting just tall enough that she can climb up on the chairs and sofa without needing a boost.  She also likes trying to climb up the chairs at the table and then on the table itself.  And of course, is now obsessed with sitting on the (brick) hearth of the fireplace, which I hate the most.   Longer books.  She's moving out of the short board book phase and starting to pay attention longer to regular story books.  Her favorite of the moment is Fancy Nancy and requests it nightly.  Hats.  Girlfriend loves making us wear hats and of course rocking hers too.

Hates:
Things in her hair other than hats.  Her bangs are totally in her eyes and as much as I try to train them to grow in a direction other than down, she wont leave in headbands or clips at the moment unless distracted for a bit.  I'm not giving up because I'm refusing to cut her bangs.  I know once I do, I'll never be able to stop and then face this issue later on anyway.  Might as well deal with the battle now.

Just following up on the diapers from last post.  The Pampers overnights were no better than her usual Seventh Generation ones.  I took the advice of one the commenters and went up a size and grabbed Huggies to try and so far so good!  A lot less night time sheet changes, which at this point in pregnancy is definitely welcome!!

Also, thank god we have a super lightweight mattress!

Sleeps:
All over the place.  Some nights she slept through from 7-7 no wake ups.  Others she wakes an hour or two after falling asleep and others in the middle of the night.  A lot times she'll just be up.  Like even after I leave the room, she'll be up for another hour or two, we apparently have mother/daughter matching insomnia.  Sometimes she wakes up so inconsolable, all I can do is bring her down and watch 10-15 minutes of tv to distract her and get her settled and then she's good to go.

I guess she's just preparing me for baby.

She also starting sleeping with a blanket.  Full size. She's always slept with a sleep sack until late spring when it got too hot to need one.  Now I lay a blanket over her and tuck her in.  She usually kicks it off or rolls out of it, but she likes the whole "tucking in process".  I can even ask her during our nightly routine if she's ready to be tucked in and get a "K" response.

Eats:
Definitely getting pickier.  Still a great eater all things considered, but definitely noticing what she doesn't like vs. what she does.  Mainly not like chicken and plain bread (she'll eat what's on the bread, but leave the licked clean portion behind).  Loves yogurt, cheese, eggs, almond butter, hummus,  asparagus, blueberries and bananas.

We had a great month and stayed really busy with birthday parties, mommy group playdates, storytime and music class, and of course lot of appointments and errands in between.

  2. She's so cute, I just love her whispy hair! Now with the colder temperatures, I'm trying to figure out how to "tuck" mine in at night with a blanket... I'm sure he will kick it off the minute I leave the room!

  7. That first picture is priceless! Lol. Speaking of blankets, Layla is completely attached to hers..well she has two. It's cute and endearing, but also a little aggravating at times because she has to have it everywhere and I do mean everywhere! Those nights I've made the mistake of washing it at night..well let's just say homegirl isn't sleeping without it. I need to do a post on it soon. ;)

  8. She is too cute!! I love your updates and look back at your past ones to see where Ellie is. Also, did you or are you having a Baby Sprinkle for K? If so I want to hear about it and see pictures! Did you register for Baby #2 or are you just using a lot of hand me downs and new purchases on your own?

  9. She's so cute, and smart. I'm always amazed when reading her monthly updates.

We have the same mattress and had the same problem with Seventh Generation overnights. Harrison was in size 5 but could still fit size 4. We went back down to size 4 and it solved our problem. It's good to know Huggies overnights worked for you. The mattress definitely makes sheet changes easy.

  10. Those first few photos are adorable! Love this update, too. Sometimes when I write age updates I don't think anyone else will care, but I know I love reading posts about babies similar to my son's age. He's only 13 months, but I know 18 months will be here before I know it! -Andrea

    1. I know! I love reading other babies updates... I know I shouldn't compare, but it's nice to see that she's doing things other children are, it's definitely hard as a FTM to know what's normal sometimes. Plus it's just fun, they grow so fast!!
