Welcome back to Day 2 of our Kid Tested, Mom Approved Link Up Party!
I'm so excited to be hosting the Mommy and Me Craft link up today. This is like a mega-post, so even if you aren't a seamstress in training, be sure to read on -- you'll be glad you did ;)
While I like to think I'm a somewhat well-rounded Mama who likes to play, cook, and of course shop for my kiddo, I can also be a bit of a craft-a-holic.
I'm always looking for fun things to make or how I can put my stamp on something we already own. While I love that Ashlynn is getting older and we starting to color, play with sidewalk chalk, and paint more often... we really haven't been able to do a true craft together quite yet. I can't wait to break out the glue and popsicle sticks, until then, I'll be doing some of the crafts myself and let her enjoy my work... like our new magnetic fabric letters!
I'm pretty sure I pinned multiple etsy versions of these before she was ever born, but now that I'm tackling my sewing challenge (12 projects in 12 months), I thought I'd try to make some myself.
Supplies:
This project was virtually free as I've become quite the fabric hoarder and have scraps for days. I also already had some leftover batting from Ashlynn's Mini Quilt, my invisible ink pen, and of course thread, so all I needed was magnets. I grabbed some at Michael's and was all set to go!
I printed this tutorial and got to work...
First, I cut my fabric and batting roughly into 4" squares. I wasn't too precise since the ends were going to be cut off, and then layered fabric, two layers of batting, and fabric.
I cut my letter templates and placed them upside down on what would be the backside of my layered stack.
I traced the letter with my invisible ink pen (which is totally drying up and I need to invest in another), and then snuck a magnet between the fabric (the backside fabric) and batting and pinned the letter together.
From there I just traced over my outline with my sewing machine, making sure to stop with my needle down and raise my presser foot at each turn.
Once, the outline was sewn and back stitched at the end, I cut my thread and trimmed the letter with my pinking shears. The tutorial recommends fray glue, but I'm hoping I can get away with out it for now.
And there you have it, soft fabric magnetic letters that are cute, handmade, and hours (or at least a good ten minutes) of entertainment and learning for your little one!
The only problem is that I've been so busy sewing teepees, I haven't had a chance to get through the whole alphabet....
I guess teaching Ashlynn to spell baby sister Kenley's name will just have to do for now!
Disclaimer: Never let children under the age of 3 play with magnets unsupervised, they can be very dangerous if swallowed!
Now, it's your turn to share your Mommy & Me Craft and link up below!
...And don't forget to stop by Meet the Sullivans next Tuesday to share your family friendly foods with Colleen!

This is the first I've heard kenley's name!! OBSESSED!! And these are way way too cute... I love them!!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I hope to bang out the rest of the alphabet when I get some extra time... hopefully that happens before Kenley is born ha!
DeleteYes! I was just looking at a pricy version of these on etsy. Loving them but not wanting to spend that much on magnets. And, these look simple enough that I might be able to pull it off... It is like you read my mind!
ReplyDeleteSuch a sneaky way to announce Kenley too! Love it.
They are really easy and pretty quick once you get started, I bet it wouldn't take much more than an hour or two to do them all.
DeleteThank you, I've been looking for a way to sneak it in :)
Oh how sneaky announcing her name that way! Very pretty name by the way! And what a cute craft!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI LOVE the name Kenley! Someday you'll have to tell us more on how you guys picked it :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great tutorial and such an adorable project. I really like that the magnets go on the inside of the letters, so you dont have to worry about them coming off. Smart!
I definitely will, need to update her nursery progress... which is currently just a dresser laying in pieces on the floor.
DeleteAnd yes... I'm sooo happy the magnets are hidden, they are such a risk being glued on where they could be swallowed! I still put them away in case one were to rip and fall out, but I feel much better about her playing with them since they are hidden.
DeleteSuch a cute idea! My baby girl's name is Kenley!!! :)
ReplyDeleteYay for Kenleys! We loved it for years but always knew we'd use Ashlynn first... so glad we are getting a chance to use this name too!
DeleteKenley!!!! I LOVE it! And such a cute way to announce her name! Also, I vote that alphabet letters get added to your shop asap.
ReplyDeleteThank you!! And haha, there are bunch of things I want to add just haven't had time!! Crazy right!
DeleteThis is awesome!! I love how your letters turned out and you make it seem so easy!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Kenley is an adorable name!!
It really is a cinch if you have a sewing machine! You could probably do them by hand too if you had the patience... I was surprised how quickly it went.
DeleteThank you!
I have always seen these on etsy and never thought of making them myself. I might need to attempt this project. Thanks for sharing and I'm loving the name Kenley!
ReplyDeleteYay for DIY! It really was a simple sewing project and it'd be so easy to alter to fit your needs (size, fonts, etc).
DeleteBeautiful magnets and good idea! Kids love playing with magnets :)
ReplyDeleteYes they do! Ashlynn has been loving them!
DeleteI am so glad I linked up today, just to find this!! I have been wanting to buy these magnets for my daughter, but I think I could totally make them. I'm excited to go look for fabric now! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks!

Could easily do the whole alphabet with a few Fat Quarters (usually $1.99 each at Joanns, and they have a ton of options)! So glad you found this and that you want to try the DIY route!
DeleteThese are so so cute!
ReplyDeleteSO cute! I am definitely a fabric hoarder too... I might have to try this! Where did you get your invisible ink pen?
ReplyDeleteI picked it up at Joanns. It seems to work better on different surfaces, but I think it's time for a new one.
DeleteLOVE these! AND LOVE the name!
ReplyDeleteThanks!.... impatiently waiting over here :)
DeleteSUCH a cute idea!! And HOW did I miss the announcement of Kenley's name!?!?! So sweet!
ReplyDeleteHaha this was the announcement!! :P
DeleteSo cute!! I actually just made these too, but didn't add the magnets!!! Bummer. Love the name!
ReplyDeleteThey are still fun to play with without! You could always hot glue them on, just be sure to supervise play! Thank you!
DeleteOh, these are adorable! I've really been itching to pull out my sewing machine and work on some fun small projects. Maybe I'll do these for stocking stuffers this year!
ReplyDeleteDo it! You'll be surprised how easy they are!
DeleteYou are just too talented, my friend!! These are awesome! And I LOVE the name…Ashlynn & Kenley…perfect! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you!! And yes, our little Irish Girls :)
DeleteBeautiful name!! Thanks for sharing. And love the magnets, how fun. :) I need to add this to the list of stuff to do!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteLove the magnet and LOVE the name! I've heard that name once before and thought it was so unique and pretty. Funny thing...it's actually been on my mind, too, as a potential girl's name since we are also expecting #2 and find out next week whether baby is a boy or girl! But I don't think my hubs would go for it :( Such a cute post.
ReplyDeleteAww, maybe your husband will surprise you!
Deleteseriously such cute magnets! and i adore the name kenley... so sweet! when are you going to start selling alphabets in your etsy shop... ;)
ReplyDeleteHaha, maybe eventually. Going to see how these hold up before giving any to friends (let alone selling them!), and thank you about the name :)
DeleteLove love love it!! What adorable magnets! I think I might have to whip up an alphabet set so that Ellie can play with them on our new magnetic chalkboard (see blog).
ReplyDeleteWhat an adorable way to reveal the name! I love it and she is going to be so cute and a great little sister to her big sister Ashlynn!!!!
Thanks Ashley! Magnetic chalkboard, genius... we may need to add one. Our SS Fridge (which is ancient from previous owners) doesn't have much magnetic space, especially where she can reach. I'd love to get a space where she can play more
DeleteKenley was on our short list! Somehow I had a feeling that would be baby K's name. Congratulations and good luck on the remainder of your pregnancy. I'm due with my first right around the same time, so it has been fun to follow along :)
ReplyDeletePS you inspire me to be more crafty!
Thank you and good luck to you! Hope you are feeling well and too funny Kenley was on your list too!
Deletethat was a cute way to announce her name :) those letters are really cute. Our problem is that only the side of our fridge is magnetic and it's practically already full! Who am I kidding.. since these letters are plush Rory would probably just carry them around hugging them, anyway.
ReplyDeleteWe have the same problem with out fridge. I think I need to make some sort of magnetic board for the playroom... next craft!
DeleteSUCH a cute way to announce her name! I love it!
