[Shortcakes] Little Fish

We finished up our swim session at the local YMCA last night and I have to say it was money well spent!  Since we don't have a pool, I wanted to get Ashlynn acclimated to the water as early as I could.  I hope to sign up again next spring for lessons before joining their pool for the summer.

The classes were a great introduction to the pool and getting the little ones used to being in the water and experience floating, kicking, and splashing - always with a parent.  With each class, Ashlynn had a bigger and bigger smile and less trepidation when being flipped from her tummy to her back to float around.  Of course she wasn't taught how to swim, but the fact that she thinks swimming is fun is all I wanted.  I want to make sure we get her enough opportunity to learn to swim when she is young so she doesn't have any trepidation as a young child when swimming at a friend's pool where I might not be able to keep a watchful eye.  I remember taking swim lessons when I was four, five, six years old, but even though I could swim with no problem, I was fearful of the deep end until peer pressure became strong enough and I just did it around eight years old or so. I just hope Ashlynn never has a fear of the water and is a strong enough swimmer I can send her to a pool party without worrying - too much.

By the third class, all she wanted to do is stick her face in the water!  I'm not sure if she was trying to drink it or actually wanted to blow bubbles like mom and dad.   During our fourth class we were doing "blast offs" where we have them float on the back (supported of course) and "push" of the wall backwards on the count of 3.  I must have had her a bit too flat on the water and she ended up going under a bit with the wave she created.  She just spit out the water that went her mouth and acted no big deal, I was almost sure we'd get tears from just being caught of guard, but she did great!

I let Daddy take her solo during the third class and fifth classes and I was able to snap some pics from the sideline and so they could get some Daddy/Daughter time.  Watching her smile, laugh, and splash around melted my heart.

Have you taken your little for "swim lessons"?  Were you a water baby?

  1. I'm loving all the fun swim pics! Lex started the day she turned six months and adores the water now!! Her dad takes her each and every week while I get a little break. Isn't it fun to see them love the water? Looks like A is the cutest fish around!!

  2. We did swim lessons with Reed this year and he LOVED them. He went under, no problem and kicked his little legs with the board. It was so adorable. Unfortunately he seems to only love his swim lesson pool. He's "meh" about all the other ones we've been to and doesn't care to go under unless he's at that pool.

  3. She is doing so good in the water! We did swim lessons last month and Owen loved them too. The water can be so scary and its a really dangerous place if they don't know how to swim, so I felt really good about getting him in a class early-- even if it didn't mean he knows how to swim yet, because were headed in the right direction. Swimming is exhausting too! We'd both come home and need naps after our class!

  4. I was definitely a water baby growing up and I wish we could spend more time at the pool! My inlaws have a pool but are having a hard time keeping it up this year and may not use it anymore after this season. We're definitely thinking about what to do next year: we've never had a membership to a public pool but may go for one and invest in "official" swim lessons at that time.
