  7. I am happy to help with breast feeding! It can be SO challenging getting them from bottle to nipple! I had a lactation consultant come over the DAY B came home. Luckily for me my mom had a LC in her bible study group! The biggest help by far was the use of the nipple shield (get one at babies r us). This saved my life! I used it for about a week. You don't want to use it too long because babies won't get as much fatty hind milk with it and they need it to grow!

I went to another consultant two more times to have her watch me nurse B. She assured me I didn't need the shield and told me to make sure B opened her mouth really wide like a fish and then I would push her head to my breast as fast as I could. Her lower lip was supposed to be around the bottom of my areola. Otherwise my nipples would become sore. I STILL struggle with this. She likes to just put her mouth around the nipple. Sigh.

The consultant also said to squeeze my breast horizontally like you would a subway sandwich (when we eat one. Also aim your nipple up towards the roof of her mouth.

This is lots of information I know but I hope it helps! Go to an appointment with a LC...it will make a huge difference!

Oh, and I still pump once a day so that my hubby can give her a bottle in the middle of the night and I can get some sleep. The pump is your friend and your ticket to freedom if you ever need to go out! We started giving B a bottle of my milk at four weeks. It's awesome.

Also try undressing her to eat, stroking a cool, wet washcloth on her back, talking to her, stroking her ear etc. It is challenging to get them to stay awake in the beginning but this should get easier as she gets older. Also when I pull away from B she tend to start sucking again because she doesn't want the breast to be taken away. Try that too.

Good luck and let me know how it goes! Praying for you! It's tough I KNOW. Don't give up though...it's so good for you and her!

Natalie (nat your avg girl) - THANK YOU so much for the tips and your experience. I'm hoping to see a lac consultant soon to work out any issues, but things are improving as A isn't quite so sleepy anymore and her jaundice is improving. Thanks again!
