[Playing Dress Up] Help me Readers!

Sorry for being MIA this week readers.  I haven't felt like myself and just been busy with work... so lots of work, sleep, and guilty pleasure television  (woohoo for the return of Gossip Girl) and not too much blogging.

But I'm back and I'm in need of your help.

Remember how my end of summer was as busy as can be?  Well, it seems I've depleted my "event" wardrobe inventory.  I've either worn items to death (like my color block Kimchi Blue dress- which has seen 3 bridal showers, my grandma's 90th birthday, and my anniversary dinner with the husband), and others that have just been worn too recently (the other urban dress that I wore to an engagement party and baby shower on back to back Saturdays)... Now that I have another baby shower this Sunday, I need something cute to wear.

Last month, I was hoping for the Doubly Dapper dress to hit the sale racks - and it did.  I reevaluated my wishlist and there were just too many items higher, plus I only had this one event to wear it (which just wasn't enough to justify the $80) when I wanted to buy the $158 Oxer jacket that I could wear daily come cooler temps.   So I passed.

After some "what do I wear" anxiety yesterday, I swung by Anthro just to see what was on the sale racks and there, in my size,  the Doubly Dapper.  Another reason I had passed on the dress initially (and during the free shipping promotion) was that a lot of reviews said the dress was a bit ill-fitting.

While I do think there are few minor issues that could be easily fixed by taking up the shoulders, or simply wearing a cami, the dress fit like a glove.  Maybe the mirror was deceiving me, but I felt like I had the tiniest waist (yay!).  Soooo it came home with me.  I'm still totally on the fence since I was really hoping to shop my closet, and save some dough, but I thought I'd get some reader input if you think the dress is worth hanging on to.

First up.... the Doubly Dapper Dress.   Keep or Return readers??

and if you like it.... do you like it better with a belt???

Or do I shop my closet and make my own version of the Doubly Dapper with items I already own? (Another reason I decided to originally pass...)

Anthro Liquid Bouquet Tank
Anthro Snakebite Belt
Banana Republic Skirt

Or do I wear another skirt I own that hasn't gotten much attention since I wore it on my vacation here and in its only OOTD look here....

J.Crew Silk Frances Top (here)
Nordstrom Hinge Skirt
Kimchi Blue O-Ring Belt (here)

Or again... is the brown belt better than grey?

Ok, sorry for the photo heavy post.  I'm just totally confused (and it's not even that a big deal)... but I'm sure you had this feeling once (or multiple times) before.   I actually really love the last outfit I put together from my closet, but I also fell in love with the dress.  Do I need it?  Should I save my money?

Feedback is super appreciated readers!

  1. I like the Doubly Dapper Dress on you without the belt because I think it makes your waist look even smaller (which sounds kind of strange, because most of the time you would think a belt would do the opposite). I also like your last outfit too. Those are my top two!

  2. Thanks for your input! I actually think w/o the belt is more flattering too, but wasn't sure if the belt added more of a "look"... I know anthro lovers love their belts :) gahhh don't know what to do!

  3. I love the Doubly dapper dress on you! I think it looks more put together than the other outfits and i like it without a belt.
I think that dress is so cute on you!

  4. I like the Doubly Dapper dress WITHOUT the belt...definitely makes you look leaner. My other fave is the last outfit with the gray belt. That whole outfit is very lady-like! (but of course, they're all cute!)

  5. I like the Doubly Dapper Dress on you as well. May I suggest a smaller or "skinner" belt? :)

  6. I love the Doubly Dapper Dress on you without the belt! You are right - it gives you the tiniest waist! I say keep, keep, keep!!

  7. I know I don't comment often on your blog but I just wanted to tell you that I love the last outfit with the brown belt. I think that would work beautifully for a baby shower AND it'll save you $80.

  8. last outfit you put together, totally. I think the DD dress is cute but it's not very different than the outfit right below it you put together with your own items. I think I'm alone here. LOL.

  9. Kelly & AppGal- Thanks! I think with the consensus I'm getting I'll definitely go beltless...

Sammie - I was going to try my gold super skinny blet (jcrew) but the problem is that the dress has a (faux) button right in the center at the waist, so it kinda interfers... the wide belt hides it....

Kim - thanks, I'm so glad it fits okay, bc I LOVED it so much in your review. The online reviews totally scared me off...

Frances - no worries about commenting... I'm glad you decided to, the interaction with my readers is my favorite part of this blog :) I also totally appreciate your levelheaded reasoning... its what the angel on my shoulder is saying, but the devil likes when I Shop.Shop.Shop :)

Justine - haha... DD def looks better than my version, but that was my "talk off the ledge" when DD hit the sale rack. I can make my own! So you prefer the brown belt??

  10. I like the dress. Keep it! It looks very flattering on you, and that is always key!

  11. I think the Doubly Dapper Dress looks great on you without a belt, but my favorite outfit of them all is definitely the last one with the brown belt. If you think you'll get a lot of wear out of the dress, then I say keep it, but maybe you should shop your closet more because it looks like you've got some great stuff in there!

  12. Hmm, doesn't sound like you are sold on the Doubly Dapper Dress. I would pass. And really I like the last combo the best. I think I like the gray belt with it.

  13. the last outfit is def my fav! i think it looks the most expensive! the dapper dress looks like u could buy something similar anywhere these days! but if you think you'll wear it more than three times, id keep it!

  14. I love the last outfit on you with the brown belt. The DD dress is very pretty too but I do like it w/o the belt. Either way, both are pretty for a shower.

  15. The DD dress looks fantastic on you! Do you have events next summer you could save it for too? Or could you put a cardy over it for events in the fall?

  16. I think the dress looks fab on you, but the last look was a close second! I am so over buying summer clothes right now...so if it were me I would wear something I had and save the cash for that cute green coat! (Which will look so cute with the Miz mooz boots! :)

  17. BeautyGirl24 - Thanks, and I totally agree about items that fit right being the ones to hold on to...

Sara - Haha, I guess I have more than I feel like I do, but my dresses and skirts are limited... jeans on the other I could wear for two wks without repeating...

Couture&Crayons - I'm def sold on the fit of Doubly Dapper (esp since its in my fav colors blue, navy, and white)... its the buying a dress when I can wear something I already own that has me feeling a little guilty...

Caraheck - Thanks for your input... glad to know the skirt and top look as cute as the dress :)

    JCHokie - Thanks!

Kristen - I know I'm going to have 2 more baby showers in 5 months and at least 1 bridal shower... and I'm sure there will be other events be engagement parties, mothers day brunchetc... So I have that in the back of my head, like if I return the dress will I be sad I don't have it in the future???

  18. Jenny - haha! I already bought the coat!! Another reason I feel a bit quilty for buying the dress bc while its not a huge deal I'm over my ideal spending allowance for the month...

again, I guess I'm afraid if I return it, I'll regret it later on...

  19. I like the last outfit best. Really cute!

  20. I think the Double Dapper dress looks really nice on you, but I LOVE the last outfit best (with the brown belt). But either way you look cute. :)

  21. You look great in the Doubly Dapper dress, keep it! And I like it best without the belt.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I really like the last outfit. I do think that the Doubly dress is super cute on you, but maybe you can save the money for other things in your wish list. I like the brown belt in the last outfit.

  23. Maren - thanks... I never even thought to wear that top with the skirt, but it may be the best way I paired it yet :)

Natalia - decisions, decisions... thanks for your input!

Britt - I think it's time I write down the running tally haha

Rosa - do you think I'll regret returning it in the future or will there be something even better??

  24. Haha, too many choices - I like 'em all!

    ReplyDelete
  25. i love you in skirts! :) you look great!

  26. i like first pic, no belt or the last outfit. if you are trying to save money the last outfit is definitely very cute. if you think you will wear the dress again then keep it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. i also agree with another comment that while the dress is very flattering it does look like something you could find just anywhere. i say return it and wait for something more special.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree with Baby Jear and caraheck, I think you might be able to find something similar. I even think that your version of it, looks perfect.

  29. I love the Doubly Dapper dress on you. Although for the shower pick I am loving the last outfit most. I think the tulip skirt just screams "shower." I like the gray belt better than the brown because it is a little more fun, therefore, I think it expresses your personality best!

    Good luck making a choice!

  30. I like the Doubly Dapper Dress but I really like the other two oufits you put together and I feel like they are more versatile. The only part of the Doubly Dapper Dress I really like is the top portion. I say return it and find another dress that you love. Something unlike anything you have or maybe a great dress for the colder months. ;)

  31. I say keep it! I love your other outfits too, but the Doubly Dapper looks darling on you :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think the dress is adorable on you! I would keep it :)
But I also like the last outfit, with the brown belt.

    ReplyDelete
  33. i say return it and make do with what you already have :)

  34. No doubly dauper dress is my $0.02. It looks more mature -- imo, and what I'm seeing on my monitor -- than I see your style. My hands down fave is the hinge skirt w/top & brown belt. Perfection. Spend the $80 on something else.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I am a little late on this but I vote for the last outfit (the hinge skirt)with either belt. You look great in all three outfits though ;)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I like the DD dress on you without the belt also.
I do like the one you put together last with the brown belt best. The grey one didn't look right at all.
