Couples Quality Time

I totally forgot to share what the Husband and I did last Sunday (well, aside from watching 8+ hrs of football)...

(in shaded rainy day morning light)

We finally painted the wall.  We used Sherwin Williams Sandy Ridge, and all paints were 40% off last weekend to boot!

We still need to add some more pizazz to the room, some new throw pillows, curtains, and seasonal table runner on next on my list...

[Paper Doll Polyvore] Fall Styling Fun

Since I've been laid up on the couch recently not feeling 100%, I've been passing the time playing around on polyvore.

I've been playing with some items I already own, some I recently acquired, and others I either missed out or haven't quite pulled the trigger on yet.   Either way, I'd thought I'd do a post sharing my styling ideas.

Items I own with my newly acquired (but not yet received) Free People Skinnies in black....

Another set with the Lilac Graces Tank, newly acquired Hudsons, and the Field Game Cardi in grey....

Two items on my 'sale' wishlist... the Cotton Candy Clouds Cardi and the Insouciant Tank...

[Recipe Share Sunday] Low Fat Zucchini Bread

You may remember, this is one of the many things I baked up last weekend and it's a bit amusing where the recipe comes from.... my 7th grade Home Ec class!

That's right readers, I'm almost positive this was the first thing we learned to bake.   It was so good, so I brought the recipe home for my mom and we've been making it ever since.

Low Fat Zucchini Bread

1 Egg
2 Egg Whites
1/3 C Vegetable Oil
2/3 C Skim Milk
2 C Sugar
2 C grated zucchini (packed)  - about 1 LARGE zucchini or two smaller ones
1 tsp Vanilla
3 C Flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp cinnamon

  1. Preheat oven to 350
  2. Grease bread pan
  3. Combine egg, egg whites, oil, milk, and sugar in large bowl
  4. Stir in grated zucchini and vanilla
  5. Separately, sift flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, ginger, and cinnamon
  6. Add flour mixture to zucchini mixture and mix
  7. Bake for 1 hour.

[Inspired By] Fall!

Recently I've had the cases of the blahs... like real life am actually a bit sick blahs, but I'm starting to feel better and have noticed that the blahs have transferred to our "great" room area.

You may remember months ago we started to stripe the living room, but taping 23' rows just was NOT working out for our OCD, so we painted the wall one solid color.  The problem was, the color we used would have been great for our subtle striping accent, but kind of dull for a full wall.  In most certain light, you can't even tell there is a difference between the wall and the rest of the room.

Now that we are finally getting some free weekends, I thought I'd post some some 'cozy' and 'homey' rooms to inspire me (and maybe you too) to start giving our great room it's much needed makeover.

... and clearly, we are sticking with the warm brown and taupe theme....

[Recipe Share Sunday] Fall Favorites - Baked Goods

Something about Fall always gives me the baking bug... the bug continues into December when I go crazy with the Christmas cookies then I'm totally over it until the next Fall.

Yesterday I went a little crazy, baking Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Muffins, Low Fat Zucchini Bread, and Apple Pecan Muffins.

I decided to go a bit crazy because my prego friend is laid up on bed rest.  I figured since she's been ordered out of the kitchen some baked goods would be a welcome change to whatever breakfast her husband has been serving her the last few weeks (and she still has a few more to go!).

Of course, I kept some for ourselves (husband's orders) and I'll probably give the 3rd bread away to a neighbor or bring it into work tomorrow.

The Apple Pecan Muffins were from a recipe I found last year here.  They are super easy to make and definitely have a nice fall flavor without being the usual pumpkin this or that.

I'll be back later tonight to show you what I decided to wear to the shower, have a great Sunday readers!

[Inspired By] In the Navy - Part 1

Recently, I've been rather impressed with how well I've been on top of some trends.... not necessarily in wearing them myself, but knowing of their existence.   I think I used to be more of a "clothing consumer", rather than a "fashion follower".   Meaning, I would "follow" trends when they were finally being sold by every major retailer after they were long gone from the runways.  Sort of like the "Cerulean" bit in The Devil Wears Prada.

Like I said, I'm still FAR from a fashion forward trendsetter, but that's mainly because I prefer to be more practical in my purchases and personal style.  However, it's been fun to actually pay attention to the ads and spreads in my fashion magazines and taking note of what celebrities are wearing before anyone else.

Last winter, when I picked up my beloved Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Mini in Stormy Grey, I had also posted a variety of other grey bags.  Turns out, as I was watching my daily dose of E! News last evening, the TrendE! segment listed grey bags as MUST HAVE for this Fall.... was I ahead of the curve? is this now going mainstream? or was I just into something while it really wasn't a big deal and now coincidentally is?... not really sure, but I'd like to go on record with picking out a potential new trend-to-be.

If you watched the Emmy's Red Carpet, you noticed one color in particular was flooding the carpet in a sea of .... NAVY (yes, I'm sorry, I love a good pun... I couldn't resist!).

Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta

Jayma Mays in Burberry Prorsum

Julie Bowen in J.Mendel

Jane Krakowski in Escada

Padma Lakshmi in Carolina Herrera

Julianna Margulies in L'Wren Scott

I know the "of the moment" looks right now include anything and everything military -especially anything in army green and lace up boots  (combat or bootie), the color camel, suedes/velvets/and texture, and more feminine touches like lace and the return of the full or circle skirt -thanks Mad Men!

After watching the Emmy's, I'm going to guess that Navy will rear its pretty and versatile head at this upcoming NY Fashion Week (kicking off this Friday)... but only time will tell if I'm wrong.  Maybe it won't be in abundance this Fall/Winter, but a future Spring/Summer color?

What do you readers think?  Have you seen a ton of navy in ads or on the runways?  Do you like to guess what new trends will be big?  Any new trend predictions you want to share??

Stay tuned for In the Navy Part 2 :)

[OOTWS] Outfits of the Wedding Season

How was everyone's Labor Day Weekend??

We attended our last wedding of the summer season and then took some time on Sunday (to recover) and Monday to catch up on some chores around the house and chill a bit.  The weather here on the east coast was gorgeous all weekend long.  Couldn't ask for more to say good-bye to the Summer.

At the beginning of our wedding season, I freaked a little over what to wear.  Having a closet full of cocktail dresses, I didn't want to spend hundreds on new ones, but having a few weddings with the same friends, I didn't want to commit a fashion crime and repeat a dress either.  Here's how the season went down....

Wedding #1

A.B.S by Allen Schwartz Abstract Sateen Halter Dress - Bluefly, summer '09
Carlos by Carlos Santana Vertigo Heels - Macy's
Gold Hoop Earrings - Express, ancient (same look)
Gold and Black Cuff - ShopTheLook.Net, summer '10 (gifted)
This dress I re-purposed from last summer, a quick hem adjustment and now the dress is more my style (and length!).  Read more here...
Wedding #2

Fei Pampas Dress - Anthropologie, summer '10
Bandolino Once Again Pumps - Zappos, summer '10 (here)
Pearl Drop Earrings - Wedding Day Jewelry
Satin Fleur Clutch - J.Crew, spring '09
I'm so excited I grabbed this dress for $39.95(!) on the sale rack - a total steal!  I plan on re-wearing it to a rehearsal dinner in October too :).  Read more about Wedding #2 (and the dress) here...
Wedding #3

BCBG MaxAzria Dress - Outlet Find in 2007 (best purchase on a whim ever!)
Carlos by Carlos Santana Vertigo Heels - Macys
Diamond Studs - Anniversary Gift (thanks Husband!)

This is my FAVORITE LBD.  I found it at the BCBG Outlet 3 years ago and bought it even though at the time, I had no where to wear it.  I've since worn it to 3 weddings and don't ever plan on retiring it.

Another shot from that night... I love the lace detail over the shoulders

This wedding was for one of my childhood friends.  She's quite the fashionista (she's an accessories editor for a major magazine) and naturally had the most gorgeous dress (Vera), shoes (Loub), and jewelry (borrowed!) ever... The NYC reception overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge didn't disappoint either.

Wedding #4

Donna Morgan Watercolor dress - Nordstrom, spring '09 (similar here)
Bandolino Once Again Pumps - Zappos, summer '10 (here)
Diamond Studs - Anniversary Gift (thanks Husband!)
Opal Disc Stretch Bracelet - South Moon Under , Spring '10 (here, ON SALE!)
Satin Fleur Clutch - J.Crew, spring '09

I'm so glad I found the perfect event to re-wear this dress that I wore to my own rehearsal dinner last summer.  Because it's quite bold, I never felt it was appropriate for the more formal weddings we've been attending.   It was the perfect dress for a beach side event, and it totally color coordinated with my friends...

This wedding at the Jersey Shore was the perfect way to end the summer.  From the adorable seaside chapel to the bay front reception venue with floor to ceiling windows, and the bonus of evening fireworks from the nearby beach, it really was an End of Summer Blowout.

Overall, my wedding guest dress dilemma was a success.  Only having to purchase one new dress on super sale, a pair of blush tone heels, and one quicky alteration - I was set for the season.   Now, time to unwind.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!
